Butter lentils and kidney beans

So a couple weeks ago I found out the Boulder public library (which is amazing by the way) has 2 full rows of cook books. Wow! I browsed until I found interesting cook books with lots of nice big pictures. I found this wonderful Indian cookbook and made a few recipes from it so far. Potato and eggplant curry, and a cucumber-yoghurt salad which were both delicious. This recipe also caught my eye. It called for an interesting spice called asafoetid which I found at the local Indian grocery store. In broken English the Indian woman running the store warned me to store the spice in an air-tight container away from all other spices or it will contaminate them. Haha its strong stuff. Anyways this dish consisted of lentils (I used french green although the recipe called for black), kidney beans, and a whole lot of indian spices. The fresh cilantro, couple tablespoons of cream, and some butter really made this dish smoothe. Not bad for a saturday morning. I'm working on presentation so I hope you like the pictures!

While making the recipe I confirmed what I've noticed before while cooking serrano peppers...I am either allergic or totally sensitive to them. I don't get it..I've eaten them and don't think they're particularly spicy but the second I start cutting them my throat gets really itchy and I start coughing uncontrollably. This time my lips and nose also starting burning. Wierd! I started to chop them but decided risking my health was not worth having them in the dish. Haha. I suppose I'm not a hard-core chef in that sense.
